Notes

In the late 1990's a unique and pristine source of untouched magnesium chloride was found in an ancient geological formation now known as the Zechstein Seabed.

250 million years ago, the Zechstein Sea consisted of inland salt water, with many of the same attributes as the Dead Sea today. It occupied an area we now call the North Sea, lowland areas of Britain and northern Europe, Germany and Poland.

One major difference between the Dead Sea and the Zechstein Sea is that the Zechstein Sea was active in the age of the dinosaurs, millions of years before industrialization and pollution.

Even though the Zechstein Sea no longer exists today, its salt beds are perfectly preserved, as its waters had made their way into deep underground deposits and fissures, becoming trapped under the rock. The magnesium chloride, the natural salt of magnesium, became trapped there as well.

Zechstein Magnesium Chloride Flakes are pulled from 2 miles beneath the Earth's surface, and are guaranteed to be free of Mercury, Lead, Arsenic, and Fluoride which can be present in other forms of soaks.

Better than Epsom

Most bath soaks are made with Epsom Salts but I prefer to craft with Magnesium Flakes instead.

First, let's understand the differences. Epsom Salt is Magnesium Sulfate and Magnesium Flakes are Magnesium Chloride. They are close in structure with one main difference that's super important when it comes to topical use. Magnesium Chloride is more easily absorbed through the skin. So, is Epsom Salt worthless? Absolutely not! You just won't get as much of the benefits from the Magnesium as you do by using Magnesium Chloride.

An even bigger difference for me, however, is how it's sourced. Epsom Salts get their name from Epsom, England where the salt was originally discovered in the early 1600's however that well dried up in the 1700s.

Now, most Epsom Salts are created by 2 companies in the US, in a lab. That doesn't feel natural to me! There's something about products that come from the Earth that simply can't be replicated. It's my belief that you can't capture the Earth's energy in a lab setting.
