How Soap Is Made

Making cold process soaps is both a science and a traditional craft that has been practiced for centuries. While the process may appear simple, it relies on a carefully balanced chemical reaction that transforms oils into the cleansing bars used every day.

At the center of soapmaking is a reaction called saponification. This occurs when oils or fats combine with an alkaline solution, typically sodium hydroxide. As the ingredients react, they transform into soap and naturally occurring glycerin.

Soapmakers carefully choose oils to influence the qualities of the final bar. Oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter each contribute different properties. Some oils help produce a rich lather, while others add conditioning qualities or help create a firm, long-lasting bar.

During the soapmaking process, the oils and lye solution are blended together until the mixture thickens to a stage known as trace. At this point, fragrance, colorants, or botanical ingredients may be added before the soap is poured into molds.

Once poured, the soap begins to harden as the saponification process continues. After the loaf has set, it is cut into individual bars.

Unlike many other products, freshly made soap cannot be used immediately. Cold process soap must cure for several weeks. During this time, excess moisture slowly evaporates and the bars become milder and longer lasting.

This curing period allows the soap to develop its final structure and balanced cleansing qualities. By the end of the process, the oils and alkaline ingredients have fully transformed into a finished bar of soap.

Although modern manufacturing has introduced many shortcuts, traditional soapmaking methods continue to produce some of the most carefully crafted and skin-friendly soaps available today.
