The Quiet Shift Into Spring

March usually arrives quietly for me.

morning tea on rustic farmhouse table with yellow flowers and warm spring sunlight through window

This year, though, winter has been a little less gentle. The snow has come in heavier waves than usual, leaving broken limbs scattered through the woods and a few downed trees across the property. We even lost our ancient pine to the high winds, and it still feels very much like winter outside.

And yet, right on time, the daffodils are beginning to emerge.

Early spring rarely feels like a dramatic beginning. The cold still lingers, trees remain bare, and the earth has not fully woken. But the shift is already underway ~ something you notice if you're still enough. The light stretches a little longer in the afternoon, windows stay open a few minutes longer on the days that feel like spring has already arrived, and the house begins to feel less closed against the cold. I start telling the geraniums I brought inside to overwinter to hold on just a little longer. It won’t be long before they can return outside again.

In my home, this time of year usually brings small changes rather than large ones.

Heavier scents begin to make space for brighter botanicals at the sink. The kettle returns to the stove more often as loose leaf tea becomes part of slower mornings. Between tasks, I open the windows for a few minutes at a time, letting cool air move through rooms that have been sealed up for months.

These shifts are subtle but grounding. They mark the beginning of a season that unfolds gradually rather than arriving all at once.

Early spring is less about dramatic transformation and more about gentle recalibration. A fresh bar of soap in the shower, incense burning in the kitchen, a few quiet moments while the day resets around you.

The rhythm of the home tends to change first.

Before the gardens begin to grow again and before the landscape fully greens, there is always this small window where the house itself begins to breathe. The atmosphere becomes lighter, routines soften, and familiar spaces take on a quieter kind of energy.

March holds that transition.

Not quite winter. Not fully spring. Just the quiet shift between.
